24 Hours of Nurburgring 2012 - The Winners Are...

The 40th installment of the grueling endurance race known as the 24 Hours of Nurburging began on May 19th of 2012 and came to a nail-biting end the following Sunday morning. The grid was composed of an outstanding 190 cars, and though not all entrants passed the checkered flag at the end of the 24 hours, many did - but who was granted the honor of standing on the podium?
Unless you live under a rock or know nothing about motorsports, then you’ve probably heard of what is known as the most challenging and unforgiving GT race around - The 24 Hours of Nurburgring. Held on a German racetrack located in the mountains that is over 16 miles in length (using the Nordschleife and Nurburgring GP Circuit configuration), the 24 Hours of Nurburgring is an all-day and all-night, all-out race event that pushes both cars and drivers to their breaking point - literally.
The winners of the 2012 24 Hours of Nurburgring (in the SP9 GT3 class) were Audi, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, . In first place was an Audi R8 LMS Ultra, under the team Audi Sport Team Phoenix and piloted by Marc Basseng, Christopher Haase, Frank Stippler, and Markus Winkelhock.
Second place was awarded to yet another Audi R8 LMS Ultra, under Team Mamerow Racing and driven by Christian Abt, Michael Ammermüller, Armin Hahne, and Christian Mamerow.
Third place in the SP9 GT3 class of the race was awarded to the Hankook Heico Team Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG driven by Frankenhout, Simonsen, Kaffer, and Arnold.
